Dorfman Poetry contest
adds ages 14-18 division
Entries are due this month for Rome Art And Community Center’s poetry contest, the Milton Dorfman Poetry Prize, open to all New York State poets — amateur and professional — adults age 18 and over. A Student Category has been added this year for high school students ages 14-18. The postmark deadline for entries is July 31, 2012. Mail entries to: Rome Art And Community Center, Attn: Dorfman Poetry Prize; 308 West Bloomfield Street, Rome, NY 13440.
The 2012 Judge is educator Susan Lincoln.
In the adult category, first prize is $125, second $75, third $50, along with honorable mentions. All award winners will also receive a certificate and their poem will be published regionally. For the student category, a $100 Gift Card will be awarded, as well as honorable mentions. There is a $5 entry fee per poem, to help pay for the judge’s stipend and prize monies. The award ceremony will be held Saturday, Aug. 11, at 2 p.m. in Rome Art And Community Center.
"This contest is a fantastic way to have your poem read and judged by a professional writer, and affords regional poets the chance to have their work published, as well as win a cash prize if selected for the top three. In its’ two decade history, this contest has seen more than 15,000 poems entered — from all over the US and other countries. For the fourth year now, it will be open to NYS residents only, to afford local and regional poets the chance to spotlight their works. This is a great time to enter your poems, whether you are a novice or professional, and join in this prestigious celebration of the written word," said RACC Executive Director Lauren Marie Getek.
The Milton Dorfman Poetry Prize was established by Mrs. Ava Dorfman in memory of her husband, Dr. Milton Dorfman. Dr. Dorfman had a great appreciation for the arts, especially poetry. This contest remains as a living tribute to the many contributions Dr. Dorfman made to the community and the arts.
All work must be original. Poems must be unpublished at the time of submission. Contest guidelines and an entry form are at www.romeart.org, click on poetry.
