Smith Post drops five in a row

Smith Post dropped their fifth straight game following a 6-0 shutout loss to Whitestown in District V American Legion baseball action at SUNYIT in Marcy on Tuesday.

Smith was swept with four straight losses during the Monsters on the Mohawk Tournament in Soctia over the weekend, and returned to the area to face the defending New York State American Legion Baseball champs in Whitestown, which is undefeated at 12-0 in league play, with a fierce Matt Engler on the hill.

Engler kept his undefeated record intact at 5-0 with a two-hit complete game performance while striking out eight along the way. Jason Koons and Steven Eychner had Smith’s only two hits. Jeff Cooke took the loss on the mound allowing five earned runs off 14 hits and four walks through six innings.

Smith dropped to 8-6 overall and 8-2 in league play, and continues their road trip on Thursday when they visit Herkimer Post at 6 p.m. at Harmon Field.

Sherrill blanks Love Post

In other District V American Legion action, Zach Durant got his first start on the mound and pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout over Love Post, 6-0, at Noyes Park in Sherrill.

Durant struckout eight batters and walked three en route to the win that was backed up by Sherrill’s seven-hit performance.

Sherrill moved to 10-4 overall and 8-3 in league action.

and will visit Sauquoit Valley High School to face Clonan Wicks-Staley Post on Thursday at 6 p.m.
