Armed standoff with ‘bath salts’ user

VILLAGE OF ILION — Bath salts are believed to have been a factor in a four-hour police stand off with an armed man in Herkimer County Sunday afternoon.

The man later surrendered and no one was hurt.

Law enforcers responded to the East Main Street home of a 24-year-old man who had barricaded himself inside at about 1:28 p.m., police said. His identity was not released.

Authorities said the man was believed to have a gun and been under the influence of the synthetic drug "bath salts".

Contact was made with the barricaded man, and authorities said he refused to come out or surrender. The man also made threats that if anyone entered the residence it would get "ugly" and people would be injured.

The man was taken transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Hartford.
