Inmate accused of attacking Marcy correctional officers

MARCY — An inmate at the Marcy Correctional Facility is accused of attacking two corrections officers Tuesday night, giving one of them a concussion.

Inmate Jessie Engles, 27, of New York City, attacked two guards after lying to the medical staff about swallowing a razor blade, according to the New York State Correctional Officers Police Benevolent Association. Authorities said several officers were trying to take Engles to an observation cell for evaluation when he punched one in the chest, then struck another in the face with his fist and elbow.

The second officer suffered a concussion and a fractured nose, and was treated at a local hospital. Authorities said he may require knee surgery for as yet undetermined injuries he suffered during the attack.

The state police are investigating and charges may be pending against Engles, authorities said. The New York City man is serving a 12-year sentence for robbery, burglary and assault, and has been in lockup since February 2009, according to state records.
