The second annual Ayla Griffiths Memorial Masquerade Ball will take place Friday, July 20, from 7-11 p.m. at the Beeches Restaurant, 7900 Turin Road.
Ayla passed away on Feb. 22, 2010 from Primary Refractory Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 16. To honor her memory, her mother, Mary Munney-Griffiths, formed Ayla’s Army with CureSearch, a group that helps fund Pediatric Cancer Research. Within the past two years, Ayla’s Army has raised over $10,000 for CureSearch.
"Last year’s event was truly wonderful. Area business’ generously donated over 50 fantastic baskets that were raffled off," Munney-Griffiths said.
"I thought of having a Masquerade Ball after remembering how Ayla tried on gowns for her High School Junior Ball," she said. "She was exhausted but finally chose just the right one." That was in December. Ayla never got to wear her perfect gown.
"Ayla loved to do things in a very grand, classy way. Her Sweet Sixteen Birthday party, at the Turning Stone Casino, was another amazing event," Munney-Griffiths said.
"Everything that I do — I do in my daughter’s honor. I will do anything that I can so that no other parent walks in my shoes."
Tickets are $35 and are available at the Beeches or by calling 335-8886. Ticket sales end July 15. All proceeds go to CureSearch.
