The City of Rome has 65 fewer residents since the 2010 Census, with its estimated population now at 33,660, according to Census Bureau data issued last week.
Utica’s population, meanwhile, declined by 125 to an updated total of 62,110. The new estimates are as July 1, 2011, compared to the 2010 Census that was as of April 1, 2010.
The bureau issued population updates for cities, towns and villages, following up on its April release of new countywide estimates; that announcement included a drop of about 590 for Oneida County, to 234,287, representing a .25 percent decrease.
Sherrill, the only other city in the county, declined by six in the new estimates, to 3,065.
Population declines were listed for all of the county’s 26 towns and 19 villages, including changes of four persons or less in several villages. Among towns, Marcy had the largest decline, by 134 to a new total of 8,848. Inmates at prison-related facilities are part of the estimates, and may have affected the Marcy totals, said Dale Miller, a principal county planner who oversees its census data affiliate; three such state facilities are in Marcy.
Miller questions the accuracy of the bureau’s annual estimates in between the 10-year Census reports, adding "I don’t get too excited about them." He says the estimates have typically underestimated the totals compared to the formal Census counts.
