Man accused of stealing syringes

A 23-year-old man is accused of stealing several syringes at the Walgreen’s store in Utica and then immediately running into the janitor’s closet to shoot up.

Police said Mathew Shepard, of Trenton Road, Deerfield, asked the clerk at Walgreen’s on Genesee Street to ring out several syringes at about 4 p.m. Thursday. When she did, police said Shepard grabbed the syringes and ran into the janitor’s closet and locked the door.

Police responded and found Shepard in the closet wearing an orange t-shirt, underwear and no shoes. Police said he was holding several syringes and appeared to have just used them to inject himself. Shepard was then found with a quantity of ‘bath salts’, police stated.

Shepard is charged with petty larceny, police said. He is scheduled to appear in City Court.
