Two ATV accidents hospitalize three
Three people were hospitalized after two separate all-terrain vehicle accidents in Lewis County on Friday and Sunday.
¿ Sheriff’s deputies said a 13-year-old girl was operating an ATV eastbound on Kosterville Road in Lyonsdale at 9:24 p.m. Sunday when the 2006 Honda went off the south shoulder and crashed into a tree. Both the teen-ager and her passenger, 30-year-old Randy J. Ossont, of Lyons Falls, were thrown off the vehicle.
Despite her injuries, authorities said the girl was able to run to a nearby residence to call for help. The girl and Ossont were both then transported to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica.
Ossont, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered a head injury, authorities said. The girl suffered non-life threatening injuries.
¿ Authorities said six people were riding ATVs northbound on Gomer Hill Road in Turin at 7:41 p.m. Friday when the first three riders made a sharp turn onto Brenon Road. The other three did not see the turn, and the fourth and fifth riders stopped on the side of the road when they lost their companions.
Due to the dirt and dust that was kicked up, the sixth ATV did not see the other two stop.
Authorities said Joseph F. Steber, 67, of Albrightsville, Pennsylvania, collided with a stopped ATV driven by Stephanie L. Meckes, 37, of Lehighton, Pa. Steber’s ATV overturned, and authorities said he was treated at the county hospital for back and chin pain.
