"The Farmer Takes A Wife" will be screened at 6 p.m. Monday in the Oneida County Historical Society, 1608 Genesee St., Utica. Admission is $2.
The Erie Canal love story "The Farmer Takes A Wife", starring Henry Fonda and Janet Gaynor, will be screened. Society trustees Joe Kelly and Frank Tomaino will introduce this film and describe its relevance to the local area. This program is sponsored by the Utica Teachers Association.
"The Farmer Takes a Wife" is based on the novel "Rome Haul," written by Oneida County resident Walter D. Edmonds.
According to a review on the Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com), "Jotham Klore is the leading canal boater on the Erie Canal. He’s also a bullying braggart. His cook, Molly Larkins, loves working on the canal and sails back and forth on it with Klore. Young Dan Farrow signs onto another boat, owned by Samson Weaver, with plans to save enough money to buy a farm. Dan and Molly fall in love, but their romance runs aground on the conflict between his love of farming and her devotion to the canal."
On the last Monday of each month in 2012, the society will screen a film that is relevant to the greater Mohawk Valley and to upstate New York. Movies that were filmed in the region, based on local or regional events, or adapted from books by local authors, will be included. All films will be shown in the society’s main exhibit gallery and will be preceded by a short discussion led by an area historian, author, or society representative. Refreshments will be served.
The Oneida County Historical Society is a private 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational institution and is dedicated to preserving the history and promoting the culture of the greater Mohawk Valley.
