Nortek Powder Coating gets incentives for building

A city firm that makes powder coatings has been given preliminary approval for incentives from the Oneida County Industrial Development Agency.

Nortek Powder Coating, 5900 Success Drive, is seeking the assistance in connection with the planned purchase of its leased facility in the West Rome Industrial Park. The company got its start in 2005 and is located in the former MGS Manufacturing plant.

The IDA board’s action on June 15 gave Nortek preliminary approval for sales and mortgage tax exemptions and property tax abatement. Final provision of the benefits is subject to a public hearing and passage of another IDA board resolution.

The incentives are a 10-year payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement, valued at $276,00, and sales and mortgage recording tax breaks, valued at nearly $10,000. During the first five years, the company will pay one-third of taxes due and two-thirds of taxes due in years six through 10. When the tax abatement ends, the company will pay the full amount owed.

Nortek pledges to add three jobs to its current 10.

In the IDA application, the cost of the project is listed as $7,114,500. Which includes property acquisition, renovations and legal expenses. The building and land are owned by a subsidiary of Mohawk Valley EDGE.

The EDGE affiliate took title to the parcel in connection with MGS moving into a newly constructed facility in Griffiss business park 10 years ago.

Nortek makes exterior powders, epoxy primers, textures, clearcoats, metallics and specialty powders. Additionally, the company offers a color matching service and technical assistance.
