RFA, Westmoreland girls place at states

CICERO — Rome Free Academy freshman Mariah Mays finished in third place during the Division I discus throw event and came in tenth place during the shot put competition, while Westmoreland senior Skyler Zawko took second place in the Division II long jump event on the opening day of the state track and field meet on Friday at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.

The two-day meet was scheduled to wrap up today.

Mays finished with a distance of 118 feet, 7 inches in the discus event and had a heave of 35-1 1/2 during the shot put.

Skyler, who will be attending Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester in the fall on a track and field scholarship, finished with a distance of 17-10 1/2 in the long jump event.

Other Rome area finishers in action on Friday included Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Alexis Kavanaugh, who was 10th in the Division II 200-meter dash; Adirondack’s Sierra Laveck, who was 10th in the Division II discus throw; Remsen’s Megan Will, who was 11th in the Division II shot put, and South Lewis athlete Sara Young, who was 15th in the pole vault in Division II.
