RFA grad Richardson competes in NCAA regionals

QUEENS — Rome Free Academy graduate Kyle Richardson and the NCAA Tournament’s Chapel Hill Regional champion St. John’s University baseball team will compete in the Tucson Super Regional this weekend.

The Red Storm will open play against Arizona in the best-of-three series beginning with a 3 p.m. game on Friday. St. John’s, which is appearing in a Super Regional for the first time in program history after winning its first NCAA Regional since 1980, will continue play against Arizona with another 3 p.m. game on Saturday. If necessary, the series will conclude on Sunday with the final game at 4 p.m.

All games of the Super Regional will air on ESPN2 and can be viewed on channel 25 in standard definition or channel 811 in high definition for Time Warner Cable subscribers.

Basketball tryouts on June 14 at Stadium

The New York State Basketball Coaches Association will be holding tryouts on Thursday, June 14 from 6-9 p.m. at the Stadium Support Facility Gymnasium for the second annual Summer Hoops Festival.

The tryouts are for boys in grades 9-12 with high school eligibility left and are from the Rome, Utica, Mohawk Valley and Oneida areas. The nine-region Summer Hoops Festival tournament will take place from Aug. 3-5 at Johnson City High School. Each team will play at least four games.
