Broadway’s Next H!t Musical on Capitol stage Saturday
The Capitol Theatre, 220 W. Dominick St., present the show "Broadway’s Next H!t Musical" on Saturday, June 9 at 7:30 p.m. The long-running off-Broadway production will be presented on stage with the original New York cast.
Reserved seating is $22 for adults, $18 for seniors and students, $15 for Capitol Friends, and $10 for children 12 and under. Tickets are on sale at the Capitol box office (337-6453) and also on the web at www.romecapitol.com.
The program is primarily improvised, with the musical comedy material made up on the spot, based on audience participation. As the audience enters, each member is given a slip of paper on which to write an entirely made-up song title. During the performance each cast member draws one of these "songs" and improvises a scene built around this number, which culminates in performance of the song. At the end of this part of the show, the audience is invited to vote for a favorite song.
The second part of the show consists of a Broadway-style musical comedy that the cast comes up with "on the fly," based on this winning song.
Because of the nature of "Broadway’s Next H!t Musical," no two shows are alike. The cast has been researching the area and will include a generous sprinkling of local references in the Capitol Theatre show. The original musical comedy performed on that date will never be presented again anywhere else.
The cast appearing in Rome on June 9 will include some or all of the following "BNHM" players: Gregg Triggs (host), Deb Rabbai, Rob Schiffmann, Robert Z. Grant, Kobi Libii, Stefan Schick, and Rebecca Vigil. The musical director/pianist is Eric March.
The New York Post says the show offers "a spontaneity, wit and inventiveness that must be seen to be believed!," while The New York Daily News notes that "the swift and gifted troop scores lots of laughs." The New York Times simply calls the show, "Hilarious!"
