Plants scavenger hunt Saturday

TOWN OF RUSSIA — A scavenger hunt looking for plants is one of the events offered Saturday at the Shawangunk Nature Preserve, 255 Shawangunk Road off Pardeeville Road, in Herkimer County. Call 826-7405 to attend.

Scheduled Saturdays from 9 to noon is: Saturday

9 ­ 11 a.m. FERNS, MOSSES, GRASSES and LEAVES ­ A LEARNING SCAVENGER HUNT.

"This is a fun way to learn more about the amazing variety of plants in the woods. Through this little game, you’ll discover subtle differences between ferns, mosses, leaves and more, as you search for the treasurers. All participants will get to make a fragrant balsam bag to take home. This is a wonderful family activity," organizers said.

Materials $5 per family.

9 ­ 11 a.m. FAMILY MEETINGS and NEGOTIATIONS

Many families could be living more harmoniously with some simple, fair and effective problem-solving methods that will be taught. These methods have been used globally in big businesses. Led by a state certified counselor. No fee.

9 a.m. - Noon BIKE HIKE The wild purple iris are likely to be in bloom and our bike hike will take us past a huge, natural bog full of them, or take a little walk down Shawangunk Lane toward our own bog (where iris blooms) Bring cameras and art materials if you wish.

9 ­ 11 a.m. MACHINE PRESERVATION. With some simple maintenance, you can help your machines last as long as you need them...it’s true! No fee.

8 ­ 9 p.m. SPECIAL EVENT - FIRE FLY MAGIC

Come experience the magic awesomeness of an Adirondack meadow full of darting lights flashing in total silence surrounded by silent sentinels of pine trees and stately stars. (Weather permitting ­ call ahead and bring bug repellent, just in case.)

June 23

9am - Noon GARDEN GUARDIAN SCULPTURE

We’ll use polymer clay to create the face of a guardian for your garden. It may be fierce. It may be friendly. The spirit will come through you. Come see what the result will be. It will be an interesting decoration to hang on your garden gate or tool shed wall. Materials $10

9 ­ 11 a.m. EIGHT HEALTHY GUIDELINES FOR LONGER, SAFER LIVING

A simplified, do it yourself program to keep you living longer and healthier. Workshop leader has degrees in health, counseling andtheology. No fee.

June 30

9 a.m. ­ noon NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY WITH CHERI SASSMAN. Cheri has been leading workshops and exhibiting on this subject for 20 years. Learn the techniques for photographing the small wonders of nature — flowers, insects, butterflies, dragonflies. After an overview of how to use your camera for close-up photography and techniques of getting close to wild subjects, the group will walk the grounds hunting for wildlife to photograph. Workshop participants should bring their camera and owner’s manual and should be familiar with how to use their camera’s features and settings. Point-and- shoot cameras should have a close-up or macro setting and a zoom feature. Digital SLR cameras should have a mounted lens capable of macro or close-focusing. Tripods are optional. No Fee.
