Pacer scores victory at Downs

VERNON — The pacer Diamond Stick Pin came up with a narrow victory over newcomer Melvyn in Saturday night’s $9,500 featured ninth race at Vernon Downs.

Two-time defending Downs driving champion Jimmy Whittemore was steering Diamond Stick Pin in the week’s Open contest as the two beat out Melvyn, who charged from fifth to the lead entering the final furlong, by a nose for a 1:51.1 triumph.

Diamond Stick Pin’s finish was his career-best win mark, and 23rd all-time. Whittemore also finished the 12-race card with three victories along with Rick Plano. The season’s driving leader Chris Lems recorded a pair of wins, as well.

Racing resumes at the Downs on Thursday at 6:55 p.m.
