State track and field meet qualifying berths on the line
Athletes from Rome Free Academy and other area schools are looking to extend their seasons at the Section III state meet track and field qualifier today at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
RFA will have 11 girls and seven boys competing for a chance to get into the upcoming state meet, taking place from June 8-9 at C-NS.
Those who win their respective event will qualify for the state championships and those who place second and meet the state qualifying standard will also be eligible.
Leading the way for the RFA girls squad at the qualifiers will be freshman Mariah Mays in the shot put and discus throw and junior Dana Husband in the high jump as well as the 100- and 400-meter hurdles. Mays and Husband both have already made the state qualifying marks in the discus and high jump, respectively.
Megan O’Connell will also attempt to make it in the 100 dash as well as the 400 relay with Jamie Marcinkowski, Nicole Anken and Mariah Johnson. The 3,200 relay of Briann Weir, Alli Hawkins, Tricia Loso, Teresa Anken and Katie Gotch will also try to place.
The Section III Class D champion Remsen Lady Rams will also send several athletes to the qualifiers, including three-time sectional winner Erin O’Connor, who was first in the 100 and 800 runs and also had a leg in the 3,200 relay with her twin sister Ashley O’Connor, Anna Roberts and Makenna Colley. Roberts will also participate after claiming the 3,000 run, as well as shot put winner Megan Will and triple jump champion Aly Atwell-Chwazik.
Included in the Class B-2 champion Adirondack Lady Wildcats entrants are junior Sierra Laveck and freshman Meghann Tanner. Laveck claimed the discus and Tanner won the 1,500 run.
Three-time event winner Victoria Campanian of the Class C-1 runner-up South Lewis Lady Falcons will compete after winning the 1,500 and 3,000 distance races and the 2,000 steeplechase along with teammate and pole vault winner Sara Young, and the 1,600 relay team of Ronni Ehlers, Gabrielle Hartley, Angela Hutchinson and Christina Platt.
Other sectional winners competing are three-time Westmoreland Class C-1 champion Skyler Zawko of the 100 dash and the long and triple jumps, along with Oriskany Class D champions Sara Sampson of the long jump and Michaela Murphy of the 400 dash, Holland Patent Class B-1 winners Shay Callahan of the long jump and sophomore Harley Buczkowski, as well as Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Class B-1 champion Tammy Beal of the outdoor pentathlon.
On the boys side, RFA senior Philip Caruso will compete in the shot put while carrying a season-best 50 feet, 4 1/2 inches, while senior Ryan Metott focuses on the discus while holding a best of 141 feet.
Rome junior Erik Winberg will participate in the 800 run on a season-best 1 minute, 57.89 seconds and will also join the 3,200 relay squad of senior Jeff Brown, junior Matt Silver and senior Connor Butters, as well.
The 110 and 400 hurdles Class B-1 champion Noah Roberts of Holland Patent looks for a victory as well along with teammate and 3,000 steeplechase winner Todd Stevens, and pole vault champion Elliot Connors. Class B-1 shot put winner Brett Fields of VVS and Class A pole vault champion Aaron Davis of Camden are expected to compete.
