Lady Rebels enjoy successful weekend
The Rome Lady Rebels 11th-grade basketball team went 3-1 over the weekend to lead three Rome teams competing at the 2012 Great Adirondack Shootout held in the Lake George Region.
The 11th-grade team’s lone loss came against the F-M Stars, 29-22. The Rebels had wins against the Utica Lady Knicks, 40-35; Saranac Cardinals, 37-25, and the Northern Lites, 54-43. The Lady Rebels were led by the scoring of Kayli Smith with 31 points, while Krista Anken and Jordan General had 28 points and McKenzie Guy and Mikenna Sochia each had 26.
The Rome Lady Rebels ninth grade team went 4-0 and won a tiebreaker to take the championship. The Rebels beat the Saranac Cardinals, 50-18, Saratoga Sparks, 55-37, the F-M Starz, 40-12, and the Northern Lites group, 41-13, to take the crown. Top performers for the weekend included Tiana Pugh with 41 points and 28 rebounds, Teresa Anken with 25 assists, and Kati Gotch with 19 steals.
The Rome Lady Rebels ninth-grade Camden AAU basketball team also participated in the Adirondack Shootout and went 4-0. They beat the F-M Stars, 36-23, and beat Saranac, 45-22, Northern Lites from the Lake George region, 48-32, and Saratoga Sparks, 47-27. Top scorers for the weekend were Kiersten Leos with 64 points, while Gwen Proper had 32 and Hayley Kelley had 29. The Lady Rebels will travel to Binghamton this weekend to participate in the STNY Flyers tournament.
River Rats sweep doubleheader
The Rome River Rats 12U travel baseball team visited Bethlehem for a Empire State Baseball League doubleheader on Sunday and swept games against the Bethlehem Bombers, 11-8, and the Delmar Batsmen, 4-3.
Derrick Miller led Rome at the plate in the first game by going 4-for-4 with a home run. Ryan Swavely and Gino DeBlasiis also hit home runs, and Joshua Wood added two hits. Zack Taylor (3-1) went the distance on the mound for the win.
In the second game, Miller was 3-for-3 and threw a complete game on the hill for the winning effort. DeBlasiis also hit 2-for-3, as Rome’s league record moves to 7-3. The River Rats travel to Niskayuna for a doubleheader on Sunday.
