VERNON — A Memorial Day Weekend doubleheader is scheduled at Utica-Rome Speedway, with racing scheduled Sunday and Monday nights.
On Sunday, the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints joins a regular show of modifieds, sportsman, pro stocks and pure stocks with a fireworks display following the action. On Monday, the modifieds will return to compete in the VP Race Fuels Race of Champions Series’ Victoria 200, paying $10,000 to the winner of the 100-lap event. Sunday’s modified winner will also become at guaranteed starter for the Memorial Day classic.
Gates open on Sunday at 3 p.m., with racing starting at 5:30 p.m. On Monday, gates open at 2:30, with racing starting at 6.
Four different drivers have found victory lane this season in the modified division, with Robby Bellinger, Jimmy Davis, Jimmy Phelps and Matt Sheppard getting the wins. Sheppard sits atop the current point standings of the $10,000 track championship over Mike Mahaney in second, third place’s Stewart Friesen, Alan Johnson in fourth and Ryan Phelps in fifth. Pat Ward, Bobby Varin, Ronnie Johnson, Willy Decker and Billy Decker round out the top 10, respectively.
Looking to join the regular cast of drivers for this weekend’s events at the speedway are visiting drivers Brett Hearn, Danny Johnson, Gary Tomkins, Ryan Godown and Jimmy Phelps. Danny Johnson, Tomkins, Tim McCreadie, and Bobby Varin are past winners of the spring classic.
Last season, Varin swept the weekend by winning the Sunday night preliminary and the main event victory from deep in the field the following day.
The Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints will also be in action on Sunday night. Jessica Zemken is expected to be on hand along with series regulars Jason Barney, Shawn Donath, Paul Kinney, Sammy Reakes IV, Justin Barger, Lance Yonge, Jeff Cook and Michael Parent.
