Small Business in Depth course for entrepreneurs

MARCY — The Small Business Development Center is presenting its "Small Business in Depth" 20-hour course for entrepreneurs and small business owners. Six standalone modules plus available one-on-one counseling comprise a course to qualify for a Certificate of Achievement in Entrepreneurship.

The classes will take place starting June 12 in Kunsela Hall at SUNYIT, 100 Seymour Road. Each class runs from 8:30 to 11:50 a.m. with a break at 10.

The fee for an individual module is $20. The fee for the series is $95, payable at the first session. The series is open to the public. Pre-registration is required. Contact the Small Business Development Center at 792-7547 or e-mail sbdc@sunyit.edu to register and to obtain up-to-date information. Checks are made payable to "Research Foundation."

The course includes six individual sessions over a two-week period — June 12, 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21. The six modules cover the essentials of business an entrepreneur should understand in order to start and operate a successful enterprise.

The first module, "Checklist for Business," is a comprehensive review of the details and myriad requirements of starting a new business. Topics include legal entity, license requirements, occupancy, networking, signs, merchandising, employees and more.

The next module, "Marketing and Government Contracting," discusses marketing, promotion, and advertising planning, especially on a shoestring budget, in addition to marketing to and doing business with government agencies.

Four modules complete the series: "E-Commerce," "Accounting and Taxation," "Financing and Incentive Programs," and "Building the Business Plan."

The series concludes with a free private consulting session with an advisor on any business topic.

Each course is taught by an Center adviser or consultant with specific expertise in the subject. Each module is a complete unit and can be attended independently.
