VVS moves on with road win

Vernon-Verona-Sherrill senior Collin Laguzza did it with both the bat and his arm during the Red Devils’ Section III Class B-1 6-1 quarterfinal victory over host and fourth-seeded South Jefferson on Thursday.

Laguzza, 3-1, got the win on the mound after pitching five strong innings of one-run baseball and finished with nine strikeouts and two hits allowed. He also added a double, triple, a run scored, and an RBI at the dish for No. 5 VVS, which travels to face top-seeded Westhill (17-4), 2-0 winners over Solvay in Thursday’s other quarterfinal matchup, on Saturday at 1 o’clock.

Marc Iseneker pitched the final two innings to preserve the win, while Alex Saville, James Flagler, and Bud Bowers all had RBIs for the Red Devils, which jumped to 14-5 overall.

Smith powers Oriskany to win

Oriskany junior Austin Smith was a jack-all-of-trades for the Redskins with two runs driven in and six effective innings on the mound to lift the sixth-seeded squad to a commanding 10-3 road triumph over three-seed Sackets Harbor during the Class D quarterfinals.

Smith, who improved to 5-3 on the bump this spring, struck out seven and allowed one run and one hit over six innings pitched. He also went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs at the dish while 15-5 overall Oriskany will take on second-seeded New York Mills (15-4) in the semifinals on Saturday night at DeLutis field at 7 o’clock. Mills, which defeated Oriskany twice during the regular season, beat Poland 5-3 on Thursday.

Noah Lupini also added a double, three hits, and two RBIs against Sackets Harbor, which ended its season at 15-4 overall.

Adirondack’s season over

The Adirondack Wildcats ended their season following a 7-4 setback during the Class B-2 quarterfinals against hosting Sherburne-Earlville.

The Wildcats, 7-10 overall, scored one in the first inning and came up short of a rally in the seventh inning as they scored three runs, but came up just short in the end with the bases loaded.

Justin Kranbuhl was hit with the loss on the mound.

The second-seeded Sherburne-Earlville (11-5) takes on No. 6 General Brown (7-9) in Saturday’s semifinals.

South Lewis moves on

The second-seeded South Lewis team edged out No. 7 Thousand Islands, 10-4, during the Class C-1 quarterfinals.

The Falcons, which moved to 17-2 overall, will get sixth-seeded Tully (9-7), 1-0 victors over Herkimer, in the semifinals on Saturday.
