RFA grad qualifies for track championship

UTICA — Rome Free Academy graduate Joe Pruckno of the Utica College men’s track and field team qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in the 110-meter high hurdles which is set to take place this weekend in Claremont, Calif.

The preliminaries of the 110 hurdles will take place at 5:25 p.m. (Pacific Standard Time) on Friday. The finals will take place at 3:25 p.m. (PST) on Saturday.

The senior Pruckno is making his second straight appearance at the outdoor championships after qualifying with a time of 14 minutes, 64 seconds at the Oneonta State May Meet on May 12. His time was the 19th fastest clocked in Division III. Last year, he placed sixth in the 110 hurdles with a final time of 14.64 en route to being named the College’s first automatic All-American in track and field. He also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in each of his last two seasons and took sixth place in the 60 hurdles at 8.23 this Winter.

Pruckno, who was a two-time national champion at Mohawk Valley Community College, was recently named the Empire 8 Conference Track Athlete of the year. He received Empire 8 First-Team All-Conference honors in 2011 and 2012, and even holds the E8 record in the 55 hurdles at 7.69.

Turning Stone Races to be held in August

The Turning Stone Resort and Casino will host its second annual Turning Stone Races on the weekend of Aug. 25-26.

The event will consist of a half-marathon, as well as 5- and 10-kilometer races. All races will start and finish on the grounds of the resort, and the courses will take runners through nearby farmlands and wooded areas.

The 5K will be held on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 5 p.m., and both the 10K and half-marathon will start at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26.

Some 120 individual prizes will be awarded for men and women in various age brackets as well as wheelchair competitors, with all finishers receiving a medal.

The entry fee includes an official race shirt, and refreshments will be available for runners after each race.
