Old Time Fiddlers open year
with meeting, pig roast, jam

OSCEOLA — The New York State Old Tyme Fiddlers’ Association begins its summer season with its annual meeting at 10 a.m., Saturday at the Fiddlers’ Pavilion, 1121 Comins Road. The meeting is open to the public.

A Pig Roast Dinner for $9 will be served at 1 p.m., followed by a free Fiddle Music Jam until 5 p.m.

The NYS Old Tyme Fiddlers’ Free Summer Concert Series begins Sunday with a concert of old time fiddle music from 2-5 p.m. played by the Association of North Country Fiddlers, the north country chapter of NYSOTFA. This group of fiddlers is known for "its energetic performances of jigs, reels, polkas and waltzes from Irish, Scottish, Old-Time, French Canadian and New England fiddle styles," association officials said.

Some of the north country fans who travel with this group entertain their audiences with colorful step dancing in time to the music. Sunday’s concert is part of a series funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. Those Sunday concerts continue nearly each week all summer (see schedule below).

The Hall of Fame and Museum is open during the Sunday concerts and special events. Facilities are handicapped accessible.

The Fiddlers’ Pavilion with performance stage and space for dancing opens onto a paved patio with umbrella tables where attendees may enjoy refreshments available from a food vendor. In the event of inclement weather, the pavilion can be closed on the sides for the comfort of patrons. Folding chairs are provided, but many bring their favorite chairs.

For directions or a map and schedule, visit the association’s website at www.nysotfa.com or call 487-8806.
