Area golfers move on to Section III finals

A pair of Rome Free Academy golfers, Joe Facciolo and Mike Vacheresse, are among those who have qualified for the Section III championships to be held later this week.

The Rome golfers were part of an 80-player field which took part in the Section III Class A qualifier meet held at the Radisson Greens par 72 layout on Monday afternoon.

Facciolo finished with an 82 round of golf, while Vacheresse finished with an 83.

Three other area golfers also advanced to the overall sectional finals. Camden golfer Seth Adams finished with a 78 score during the Class A meet to qualify, and Adirondack golfer Joey Pettinelli and Oriskany golfer Steve McCorduck also qualified. Pettinelli qualified during the Class B meet held at Kanon Valley Golf Club par 72 course after he shot an 84, while McCorduck qualified for a spot at the sectionals after he posted an 86 at the Twin Ponds Golf Club par 70 course during the Class D meet.

The Seven Oaks golf course at Colgate University will be the site for the sectional finals on Thursday and Saturday.

New Hartford won the team title in Class A with a score of 385, while Derek Bard of New Hartford was the top individual golfer with a score of 71, while Westhill won the Class B title with 401 points, as South Jefferson’s Ryan Clark and Ilion’s Dan North finished tied with a score of 76’s to lead the individual winners, Herkimer won the Class C title with a score of 414, as Bishop Grimes’ William Wallace and Port Byron’s Dan O’Hara finished with 77’s in the event, and Alexandria Bay won the Class D title with a score of 429, and Brandon Pupp from Stockbridge Valley was the lead golfer with a score of 79.

VVS tandem can finish third

The Vernon-Verona-Sherrill doubles team of Dylan Duchene and Ian Yahnke have a chance to grab a third place result in the Section III Class B boys tennis championship meet after coming up with wins on Monday at the Utica Parkway Courts.

The VVS duo captured two wins in the first doubles bracket to reach the semifinals by beating Camden’s Jordan Nuber and Rich Price, as well as New Hartford’s Evan and Ross Padula. The two lost to Jamesville-DeWitt’s Abe Davis and Steve Procopio in the semifinals, but will battle for third place in the bracket when they face Chittenango’s Conor Delaney and Tanner Makowski this afternoon.

The other VVS doubles group of Travis Regner and Paul Ziarko also competed in the second doubles bracket but lost to Oneida’s Travis Grems and Jehan Martyn in the first round. The Red Devils’ Matt McCall and Andrew Kane had first round singles losses, as well to Carthage’s Jordan Abbass and Homer’s Patrick Kiernan, respectively.

Camden’s Jesse Zavaro suffered a quarterfinal defeat from Christian Brothers Academy’s Matt Nardella, while fellow Blue Devil Rich Price lost to New Hartford’s Deepak John, and Ryan Lisenko fell to Cazenovia’s Noah Zinsmeister in first round action.

The duo of Colton Covich and Taylor Short suffered a first round loss to CBA’s Greg Maziuk and Barnes Werner as Holland Patent’s lone Class B representatives.

Westmoreland falls to Herkimer

The Westmoreland girls track and field team fell in their final regular season match to Herkimer, 84-48.

Skyler Zawko recorded three wins for the Lady Bulldogs, including the 100 run, the long jump and the triple jump.

Alexa McGregor was also victorious in the shot put with a heave of 29 feet, and Alison Brockway won the high jump at 4-9.
