Celebrity waiters promote carbs for a good cause

The Relay for Life teams Rainbow of Faith and Rainbow of Hope from the First Presbyterian Church and Team Chris and Tony, established in memory of Christopher Destito, will host the "Carbs against Cancer" buffet on the Outdoor Cafe at the Savoy Restaurant from 5-8 p.m. Thursday.

Tickets are available by calling the First Presbyterian Church at 336-1380, The Savoy, and will be available at the door. The tickets for adults are $15 and for those age 12 and under, $8. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.

It will be the fourth annual "Carbs Against Cancer." The event is in memory of Destito, the owner of the Savoy and distinguished community leader, who helped to organize the first event. Team Chris and Tony is also honoring Sixth Ward Councilman Tony Darcangelo who also lost his battle with cancer.

Destito suggested using celebrity waiters so that all gratuities generated would be donated to the American Cancer Society. The celebrity waiters for this year are: Mayor Joseph R. Fusco Jr.; Sen. Joseph A. Griffo, R-47, Rome; County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr.; Anthony Darcangelo Jr.; Rome Area Chamber of Commerce President William Guglielmo; Dr. Douglas Tardugno; Daniel Tauroney; former senator Raymond Meier; Timothy Birnie; and Robert Angelicola. The waiter who collects the most gratuities will receive the "Chris Trophy." Darcangelo won the award for raising the most tips at last year’s event.

Rick Montalbano will play the keyboard, along with Ronnie Leigh, vocals; Rick Montalbano Jr., drums; and Tom Bronzetti, guitar. The musicians are donating their time and talents in order to entertain all the diners.
