Bowlers honored at banquet

The Rome Bowling Association held its annual awards banquet at Delta Lake on Saturday night, with Merle Foster claiming Bowler of the Year honors.

James Grago III was the runner-up for Bowler of the Year, while Greg Puccio and Bob Moro were also considered.

Vinny Narolis earned "Under 200 Average Bowler of the Year," with Eric Elliot, Rich Mulvaney and Rich Matt as runner-ups.

Jim Malone was Senior Bowler of the Year over Paul Panek, Norm Young and Bob Rieck, while Robert Andrews received Camden Bowler of the Year as Don Clark James Rivenburg and Bronson Skibitski took runner-up honors.

Jim Taylor was also honored for his retirement from the assocation board of directors with 40 years of service.

Rome AAU teams take part in tourney

The Rome Lady Rebels and the Rome Spangles AAU girls basketball programs both participated in the Western Fingerlakes Main Event over the weekend.

The Lady Rebels eighth-grade team was 3-1 and the sixth-grade squad finished 2-2. The eighth graders defeated Seneca Blue Devils, 59-36 and the Utica Lady Knicks’ Holmes and Mauro squads, 52-39 and 70-39, respectively, with their lone loss coming against the Jammers, 51-45. The Top scorer for Rome was Tian Pugh witha total of 94 points. The sixth-grade team defeated the STNY Flyers, 46-36 and Neward, 57-18, while taking losses to the York Lady Knights, 31-28, and the Upstate Ladies, 42-41. Serenity Redus led the team with 45 total points.

The Spangles ninth-graders went 3-1 in the event, while the sixth and 11-12th grade teams both finished at 1-3. The ninth grade team beat the CCNA Lady Cyclones, 50-45; the Western New York Lady Lakes, 54-45 and Fingerlake Fury, 52-51, while taking their only loss to Rochester YMCA, 60-44. Jamila Taylor led the way with 64 points and 10 assists and Reily Reinold had 55 points. The sixth-graders had their only win against the Newark Lauers, 35-13, while taking defeats from the Southern Tier New York Flyers, 29-28; the Upstate Ladies Flyers, 29-28, and the York Lady Knights, 26-21. Sherifa Taylor had 34 points and 10 assists to lead Rome.

The Spangles 11-12 grade team beat Southern Tier Hornets, 74-57, and had losses to the Utica Lady Knights, 70-57; Rochester Warriors, 64-51, and GV Pride, 58-56. Alana Quance put in 55 points to lead the Rome squad.

River Rats swept in doubleheader

The Rome River Rats 12U travel baseball team lost both games in a doubleheader in Clifton Park to the CP Legends, 7-2 and 9-3, on Sunday.

Zack Taylor (2-1) went the distance on the mound in the first game, as Derrick Miller hit 2-for-2 at the plate, including a double, while Joshua Wood and Gino DeBlasiis added a hit apiece.

In game two, Shea Simons was 2-for-3 at the dish as Taylor and Miller each recorded a hit. Miller (1-2) recorded the loss on the hill.

Rome’s record falls to 5-3 in the Empire State Baseball League and will return to action in Bethlehem on Sunday to battle the Bethlehem Bombers and the Delmar Batsmen.

Romans claim top six in bocce event

Rome teams swept the top six spots in the annual "Dempsey" Cianfrocco Memorial Coed Doubles Bocce Tournament at the Toccolana Club on Saturday.

A tie for first place was decided due to time constraints with Rich and Anne Maria Zakala of Galliano No. 2 and Lynn and Joyce Opper of L and J sharing the top prize.

Third place went to Dave Salce and LuAnn Cheri of D and L, while fourth was awarded to J and N of John Rodriguez and Nancy George. Cortese Trucking of Aaron Breault and Gail Cortese was fifth, and T and M of Tino Emmanuele and Mari Migliori finished sixth.

The second annual Louis T. Giardino Memorial Father/Son Doubles Bocce Tournament will be held on June 9 at the Toccolana Club. Applications are available at the club.
