One dead, others seriously injured

TOWN OF PLAINFIELD — A woman was killed and her young son seriously injured when she passed a stop sign at the intersection of Route 20 and County Route 18 just past the Oneida County border in Otsego County Saturday afternoon.

Three others were seriously hurt.

State Police at Richfield Springs said Nicole M. Dukerich, 22, of Mohawk, Herkimer County, was operating her 2012 Chevrolet northbound on Route 18, with her son as passenger, when she drove through the stop sign at the Route 20 intersection and collided with a westbound 2005 Ford driven by Heather R. Simmons, 36, of Canastota, Madison County, at 12:36 p.m. Simmons was driving with her 12-year-old daughter and her daughter’s 13-year-old friend.

Dukerich suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said. Her 3-year-old son suffered serious injuries and was transported to St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica, and later transferred to Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse. He was listed in serious condition, troopers said.

Simmons suffered multiple injuries and was airlifted to St. Elizabeth’s where she also had been listed in serious condition. She was listed in fair condition this morning, a hospital spokeswoman said. Simmons’ daughter suffered a severe head injury and was later transferred from St. Elizabeth to Upstate Medical where she is listed in critical condition. The 13-year-old girl was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital, New Hartford, with multiple injuries and then transferred to Upstate where she is listed in serious.

The State Police Troop C and D Collision Reconstruction Units, Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, Otsego County Sheriff’s Office and Bridgewater, Clayville and West Winfield fire departments assisted.

An investigation into the crash continues, troopers said.
