Family Life, Recovery center offers open house

The Center for Family Life and Recovery, Inc.’s Oneida County Prevention Council wants you to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month (May 2012) AND National Prevention Week (May 20-26).

The public is invited to attend the agency’s community Open House and Informational Expo on Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. 10:30 a.m., in its main office, 502 Court St., Suite 401, Utica, to promote understanding of mental health issues and the resources available to improve our communities’ health and well-being.

In the United States, 26.2 percent of individuals over the age of 18 suffer from some form of mental illness, in any given year, the group said.

One in eight children living in the United States suffers from an emotional or behavioral disorder.

In Oneida County, compared to the national average, our youth are at a higher risk of depression and serious contemplation of suicide, than ever before, center officials said.

Officials there said, "As a community, our best chance of understanding and preventing mental health issues like depression and substance abuse, and breaking the stigma associated with them is to openly discuss these issues & diminish the negative impact that mental disorders have on our children, families and the community."
