RFA rides Cooke’s arm to triumph

Rome Free Academy junior pitcher Jeff Cooke hurled his fifth complete-game victory of the season on Wednesday as he led the Black Knights to a 7-6 road victory over Central New York Counties League foe Cicero-North Syracuse.

Cooke, 5-1, scattered 11 hits, walked five batters, struck out four and allowed five earned runs, but shut down C-NS with runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out to preserve the win.

All five of Cooke’s wins have come on complete games for RFA, which improved to 5-5 in the league and 9-9 overall and snapped their two-game losing streak.

Leading the Romans’ offensively were Ryan Reilley with two RBIs, as Garrett Reilley, Dylan Thomas, Robbie Waller, Josh Mazzaferro, and Cooke all drove in a run apiece.

RFA had a five-run third inning that was highlighted by RBI singles by Garrett Reilley, Waller, and Cooke, while Ryan Reilley finished off the attack with a two-out two RBI single.

Joe Pokrentowski was saddled with the loss for C-NS, which dropped to 11-8 overall, as Eric Hamilton had a home run offensively for the Northstars.

RFA hosts Oswego today at 5 p.m. DeLutis Field in a makeup contest in its Senior Night game.

Oriskany falls to Mills

Oriskany dropped its second Center State Conference Division IV contest against New York Mills this week following their 4-1 setback during a continuation from a game started on Monday at DeLutis Field that was delayed by rain after two innings.

Sam Martel and Dan Buehler led the Oriskany offense with two hits each, while Austin Smith took the loss on the mound.

Oriskany fell to Mills, 4-3, in the first game on Monday before the rains came.

The Redskins ended the regular season at 7-3 in league play and 13-5 overall and will await the start of the Section III playoffs scheduled to begin next week.

John Sadallah led the Mills offense with two hits and two runs scored, as Zach Vennero and Joe Pacini each added two RBIs apiece, and Addison Wolanin got the win on the bump.

The Marauders improved to 9-0 in the league and 13-4 overall and have won seven straight games.
