Roman Czerwinski, 88, of Rome, passed away on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, after a couragous battle with cancer at his home with his loving family at his side. He was born on October 23, 1923, in Jastarnia, Poland, the son of Vincent and Martha Czerwinski. He graduated high school in Poland. On June 29, 1946, Roman was united in marriage to Sophie Cebula in Beirut, Lebanon. Mrs. Czerwinski passed away on September 13, 2009. Roman and Sophie resided in Rome since 1956.

He was employed by Revere Copper and Brass Products for over twenty-five years, retiring in 1985.

Roman served in the Polish Navy when Germany attacked western Poland. He was a prisoner of war for six weeks before he was released and joined the Greek underground. Roman spent the next six months with the Greek resistence. In October of 1944, Roman was able to join the British 8th Army’s Polish Third Corps, armored division in Africa. After the war was over, the Polish Third Corps were shipped to Lebanon to be reunited with their families. Roman ended up meeting the love of his life whom he married after only three weeks; a blessed union that lasted sixty-three years.

He was a member of Transfiguration Church, the Polish Home, the Polish Independent Club, and served on the Rome Planning Board for sixteen years.

Roman had a very active retirement where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and traveling. He was able to travel to Europe seven times. He was also a diehard sports fan of the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres.

Surviving are a daughter, Helen Page, of Rome; a son and daughter-in-law, Casey and Sylvia Czerwinski, of Rome; three grandchildren, Christian Czerwinski, Michele Czerwinski, and John C. Page, Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Rasheed Brooks and Shalissa Williams; and a brother, Stefan Czerwinski. Roman was predeceased by a sister, Kazia; and two brothers, Vincenty and Wladeck.

Roman’s family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Slocum-Dickson Medicial Group and Dr. George Tomy and to Hospice and Palliative Care for all the kindness and compassion shown to him.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, and a Mass of the Christian Burial at Transfiguration Church at 11:00 a.m. where the Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio will officiate. Interment will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
