Lansing K. ‘Lance’ Ryder
Lansing K. "Lance" Ryder, of Milford, CT, (formerly of Rome, NY), age 87, passed away at Rome Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, after a long illness. Lance was born on July 22, 1924, the son of Keith Ryder and Lillian Abare Ryder in Johnstown, NY. He was a graduate from Johnstown schools.
After high school, he played semi-professional football for the Johnstown Olympics. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1944 and continued his service with the United States Army Reserves as a Master Sergeant.
On September 19, 1948, he married Marie Lanigan of Rome at St. Peter’s Church, in Rome. They lived in Rome for many years before relocating to Milford, CT, in 1974. Prior to moving to CT, Lance worked at Rome Cable Corp. He was later employed by Georgia-Pacific, Stamford, CT, and Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, until his retirement.
During his years in Rome, he was involved with Little League Baseball, Pop Warner Football, the Board of Directors at Rome Laboratories, and St. Peter’s Church. He was very proud to be a Roman and was happy to raise his large family here.
He is predeceased by his wife, Marie (Lanigan) Ryder; his daughter, Patricia Ann Ryder; his granddaughter, Tricia Alteri-Jeffers; and his grandson, Jeremy Denhup.
He was fortunate to find a very special person to spend the remaining years of his life with — Anne Keenan of Trumbull, CT. They enjoyed their time together in Connecticut and also spent the winter months in Bradenton, FL.
Lance leaves behind a family that he was extremely proud of, Margaret (Peggy) Alteri and Michael Gena, of Syracuse; Kathleen (Kathy) and Charles Oliver, of Rome; John and Susan Ryder, of Ava, NY; Mary Sue and James McKernon, of West Haven, CT; Colleen Denhup and Joseph Leto, of Milford, CT; and Rosanne (Rose) and Robert Owen, of Oneida, NY. He also leaves twelve grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Edward and Donna Lanigan, of Ava; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012, at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, at 8:15 a.m. and a Mass of the Christian Burial at St. Peter’s Church at 9:00 a.m. Interment will take place in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
