74-year-old tasered after trying to cane police officer

A 74-year-old man was Tasered into submission at the north Utica Price Chopper Friday afternoon because law enforcers said he kept swinging his metal cane at an officer’s head.

Police said Allen Coleman, of Humphrey Gardens, Utica, had been previously banned from the store for shoplifting and disorderly behavior, yet he returned to the Price Chopper at about 2:30 p.m. An officer responded and attempted to take Coleman into custody, which is when the 74-year-old man started swinging his aluminum can at the officer’s head.

Police said Coleman shouted obscenities and threatened to kill the officer.

Coleman was shot with a Taser and taken into custody. Police said he was found with a glass smoking device with cocaine residue.

Coleman is charged with first-degree menacing, third-degree trespass, resisting arrest, seventh-degree possession of a controlled substance and third and fourth-degree possession of a weapon, police stated. He is scheduled to appear in City Court.
