RFA grad places 19th in NCAA Regionals
CONOVER, N.C. — Rome Free Academy graduate and Newberry College senior golfer Matthew Campbell completed his collegiate career with a 1-over-par 73 to finish tied for 19th place after going 4-over-par for a total of 220 at the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional on the Jones Course of the Rock Barn Golf and Spa on Wednesday.
Campbell wrapped up his career with a Newberry record 107 career rounds and a stroke average of 73.71, which ranks second in school and South Atlantic Conference history. His 72.68 season average is the fourth-best in school history and fifth-best in SAC history.
He was at even par at the turn on Wednesday, but carded a double-bogey on his 10th hole before a birdie on his 13th hole to finish at 1-over-par. He had five birdies in the 54-hole tournament and was the second-highest finisher from the South Atlantic Conference.
USC Aiken’s Matt Atkins was 6-under to claim medalist honors, while Georgia Southwestern’s J.P. Griffin at 5-under-par and Eckerd’s Jeff Evanier at 4-under-par were the individual qualifiers for the national tournament. The top two individuals not on the five qualifying teams advanced to the nationals.
Run for the RACC 5K set for Saturday
The Rome Art And Community Center’s sixth annual Run for the RACC 5-kilometer road race will be held on Saturday at the Rome Art And Community Center, 308 West Bloomfield St., and this year the event will include a closed-course track walk in 1- and- 3-mile distances.
The Run for the RACC is a competitive 5K run, Kids Fun Run and Walkathon event, and is a part of the Route 20 Road Challenge and the Utica Road Runners Grand Prix Series.
Pre-registration is a fee of $20-25 per participant, and registration fee of $30 on race day. The Kids Fun Run registration is $3 per child.
Participants can register individually or as part of a group. Advanced discounted registration is going on now on the RACC’s website www.romeart.org
This year, the event will feature a closed-course track walk in 1- and- 3-mile distances held at the New York State School for the Deaf track starting at 8:30 a.m.
The 5K wheelchair division will begin 8:59, while the 5K runners will start at 9, and the Kids Fun Run will begin at 9:45.
Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 overall finishers in the 5K race, 1 mile walk, and 3 mile walk. Age division prizes will also be awarded to the 5K participants.
ALS Walk and Run to be held at SUNYIT
MARCY — The ALS Walk and Run to fight Lou Gehrig’s Disease will take off on Saturday morning from the SUNYIT Field House with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m.
The 2-mile walk and 5-kilometer run starts at 10 a.m.
Pre-registration will be held on Friday night between 5:30-7:30.
