Investigators seek woman who reported Verona fire

VERONA — State police investigators are trying to find an unknown woman who reported the structure fire on Sand Hill Road Friday morning.

The cause of the fire at the vacant residence remains under investigation.

Oneida-based state police said a woman at the scene of 5266 Sand Hill Road flagged down a passing motorist at about 6:15 a.m. and asked him to call 9-1-1, since she had no cell phone.

Troopers said the woman then left the scene prior to the firefigthers arriving.

The two-story residence has been vacant for several years, authorities said. Five volunteer fire departments arrived and knocked down the fire in about 30 minutes. No one was injured.

State police are trying to identify and find the unknown woman to ask her about the fire. Anyone with information about her or the fire is asked to call Senior Investigator Lane Newton or Investigator Dennis Dougherty at 366-6000. All calls will be kept confidential.
