Belly dancing, books, USO dance among Dorfman Center events

Belly dancing is among the fitness classes starting in the Ava Dorfman Senior Center, 305 E. Locust St. Also, community programs include a book club, breakfast club and USO dinner dance.

Belly Dancing classes will begin on Thursday from 5:30-6:30 p.m., for a six-week session for $60 or $48 for members. It’s for those who have never tried Belly Dance and for those who want a refresher course reviewing basic steps and drills. "A one-hour workshop including stretching, basic moves, lots of drills and intro to easy combinations. Increase mobility, flexibility and core strength," organizers said.

Senior Stretch Yoga starts May 18, taught by Sarah Kaczor of "Just Breath Yoga Studio" For $32 or$26 members. Learn to improve your breathing, restore your good posture, stretch and move joints and muscles.The four-week class is held on Fridays from 11 a.m.-11:50 a.m. Participation is welcome throughout program.

Chair Pilates, taught by Kathy Angleton, begins on Monday May 21, from 2:45-3:45 p.m. The focus is on strengthening and stretching the core muscles, which include the back, and the abdominal muscles and posture. Relaxation techniques are also included. The eight-week session is $38 or $28 for center members (Two classes — Chair Pilates and Basic Fitness — can be taken for $50. Participation is welcome throughout program.

Other fitness classes already under way can still be joined, including Tai Chi Class, Stay Young, Strong Bones, Body Sculpting , Zumba, Zumba Gold, Beginner Line , Basic Fitness and Clogging.

Thursday, May 10 the Book Club will meet at 10 with everyone welcome.

A Member Council meeting will be held Thursday at 12:30 p.m.

The center’s offers an education program at 1 p.m. Thursday that will feature a presentation on Stroke Awareness.

A computer class on Microsoft Word will be on Tuesday, May 15 at 2 p.m.

The monthly Breakfast Club will be held on Wednesday, May 16 at 8:30-10:30 a.m. French toast, sausage or bacon, scrambled eggs, English muffin are included for $5. Scrambled eggs, sausage or bacon, English muffin cost $3.50. All include juice, coffee or tea. Reservations are required.

The center holds its sixth annual USO Dinner Dance on Tuesday, May 22, at the Center from 4:30­7:30 p.m. Dinner is stuffed chicken breast dinner with all the trimmings. Dance music will be by DJ Frank. Tickets must be purchased by Friday, May 20. The cost is veterans: $5 ; members: $10; public: $15.
