Yankee Manny wins at Downs

VERNON — Yankee Manny saved the best for last en route to a 1:54.3 victory in Friday night’s $7,600 featured ninth race at Vernon Downs.

With trainer Frank Davis doing the driving for owner Brian Green, Yankee Manny was steady in the early going as Grey Ice took the field at the quarter, and Gelato Man took over at the half, before Yankee Manny rallied from fifth at the quarter and went three wide around the final turn before sprinting into the lead down the stretch and grabbing the win.

The time is a win mark for the 6-year-old gelding.

Davis also finished first with Unraveled, at 1:56.2 during the third race, to record his initial double at the four-night meeting.

The Downs today will simulcast all of the races from Churchill Downs, including the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby, which is slated to go off at 6:24 p.m.

Vernon’s 12-race live card tonight will begin at approximately 7:05.
