Nature Preserve offers workshops

TOWN OF RUSSIA — Cloverleaf baskets and self defense are topics Saturday at the Shawangunk Nature Preserve, 255 Shawangunk Road off Pardeeville Road, in Herkimer County. Call 826-7405 to attend. Events are free although some have materials fees.

Saturday, 9 a.m. ­ noon May Day Cloverleaf Basket: "It’s small but the design is clever and delicate, kind of like a Celtic knot...a pleasant challenge and a satisfying result." Materials $10

Basic Self Defense A workshop for anyone who wants to know how to protect themselves and loved ones.

May 12: Making Fertile Soil .Unless you’re really, really lucky, most of us could improve our soil structure to improve tilth and fertility. We have a clay base and had to create most of our garden soil with locally available supplements. We’ll share what we did to get good crops where experts said nothing edible would grow.

Keeping Clean Without Chemicals. Ways our life and home can be hygienic without potentially harmful chemicals ­ pesticides ­ herbicides...

May 19, 9 a.m. — noon Bark Structures Freshly harvested bark provided our ancestors with many useful containers, even sides and roofs of buildings. We’ll find a tree that is almost dead and being crowded out then we’ll teach you how to strip off fresh bark and turn it into a container. Materials $10.

Coping With Inevitable, Personal Challenges. How to wholesomely deal with the major four life crisis’s we each must face. Led by a state certified counselor.

May 26, 9 a.m. — Noon Art On Location It’s time for the pink Lady Slippers to bloom. We’ll direct you to a lovely location in Shawangunk along Misty Brook where you can draw or paint something fresh from nature.

Introduction To Guitar & Harmonica. Bring your own instruments and learn some easy ways to entertain.

June 2, 9 a.m. ­ noon Trellis Making: Using local branches and twigs with a few hand tools even inexperienced carpenters can have a fun, creative time making a rustic Adirondack style garden trellis to be enjoyed throughout the year. Bring a hammer, pruning (bow) saw, hand pruners and your choice of bug repellent or appropriate clothing to work outside. Participants may work inside or in an open shelter if needed. Materials Fee $15

The Shawangunk Nature Preserve is a 345-acre forever wild, non-profit, holistic, deep ecology learning and cultural center located between Cold Brook and Grant, off Pardeeville Road.
