Head-on collision takes life of Herkimer County man

TOWN OF COLUMBIA — A 70-year-old Herkimer County man was killed in a head-on collision on Route 28 Tuesday afternoon. The other driver was hospitalized.

State police said Steven Allen, 48, of Ilion, was northbound at 3:10 p.m. when his car crossed over the center line into the southbound lane. Troopers said Allen’s vehicle then collided head-on with a southbound vehicle driven by Conrad Lupardo, 70, of Richfield Springs.

Lupardo’s vehicle went off the west shoulder, rolled over an embankment and traveled about 130 feet before it finally came to rest. Lupardo was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers stated.

Allen was taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital where he is listed in fair condition. Trooper said the accident remains under investigation. No charges have been filed so far.
