Romans sweep top six in bocce tourney

Rome players swept the top six spots during the 11th annual Men’s Singles Bocce Tournament on Saturday at the Toccolana Club.

Ed Emmanuele came out of the loser’s bracket and won two matches over the undefeated Bernie Colangelo to claim the tournament. Colangelo, who beat Emmanuele earlier in the 28-man tournament to send him into the loser’s bracket, finished as the runner-up while Todd Lanzi placed third. Justin Salce picked up fourth, Tino Emmanuele was fifth and Bryan Costello captured sixth.

The annual Dempsey Cianfrocco Memorial Coed Doubles Bocce Tournament will be held at the Toccolana Club on Saturday, May 19.

River Rats split two baseball games

The Rome River Rats 12U travel baseball team opened its Empire State Baseball season splitting two games with visiting Guilderland in a doubleheader on Sunday. Rome went on to win the first game, 6-1, but fell in the second match, 8-7.

Shea Simons, Ryan Swavely and Carl Graziadei each batted 2-for-3 at the plate in the first game, as Zack Taylor added a double and went the distance on the mound for the winning decision.

In game two, Derrick Miller hit 2-for-2 and pitched a complete game on the mound in the losing effort.

Rome will host a doubleheader against the visiting North Colonie Bison on Sunday with the first game starting at noon at the Bobby Page Memorial Baseball Complex.

Lady Rebels squads go 7-1 at tournament

ITHACA — The Rome Lady Rebels AAU girls basketball program sent two teams to the Upstate Ladies Basketball Tournament over the weekend, with the ninth-grade squad coming out victorious and the sixth-grade squad finishing 3-1.

On Saturday, the ninth-graders, coached by Rick Leos, beat the Auburn Lady Maroons, 46-40, and the Lady Knuckleheads of Rochester, 51-27, then went on to sweep the STNY Flyers of Binghamton, 49-23, and the Lady Fusion of Rochester, 40-19, on Sunday.

The sixth-grade team scored wins over the JT Lady Wildcats, 36-14; the Catskill Mountains, 42-17, and the Elmira Lady Express, 24-17, and lost to the Syracuse Nets, 33-28. Amanda Wilbert led the team with 36 points, Serenity Redus put in 28 points and Sydney Zegarelli scored 24 points.

Spangles hoops teams open up season

The Rome Spangles girls basketball teams opened up their spring seasons over the weekend during the Albany Spring Classic.

The Spangles sixth-grade team suffered three losses after they fell to the Lady Falcons 27-12, the Lady Dogs 43-17, and the Lady Hoopsters 21-10. Leading scorers for the Spangles were, Makenna Reinold’s 11 points and Sharifa Taylor with 10 points.

In other action, the Spangle ninth-grade team went 3-1, scoring wins over the Advantage Titans, 34-11, and the Foothills, 45-31, and over the South Glen Falls Lady Dwags, 48-37. Their only lost was to the Dawson Blues, 42-22. Leading scorers for the Spangles were Riley Reinold with 45 points, Sierra Thieme with 22 and Jamila Taylor with 20.

The Spangle 12th-grade team went 2-2 during the event. They defeated the ADK Panthers, 51-21, and the Albany Dream Team, 51-49, before falling to the Fulton-Montgomery Stars, 70-51, and to the Dawns Community Blues, 54-27. Leading scorers for Rome included, Alana Quance with 50 points, Aubree Kotary with 38 points, Fallon Reinold with 35, and Maya Nelson with 20 points and 15 rebounds.
