Longtime Lady Red Devils’ golf coach records 100th career win
The Vernon-Verona-Sherrill girls golf team stayed undefeated and collected head coach Diane Waldron’s 100th victory at the school following a 235-256 triumph over Holland Patent on Wednesday.
Amanda Snizek led the 4-0 overall Lady Red Devils with a 49 score on the par 36 Oneida Community Golf Club course, as Micaela Shay added a 56, Nicole Scotto shot a 63 and Emily Wagner hit a 67 to grab the milestone win for Waldron, who is in her 11th year at the coaching helm.
Amanda Kahler paced HP with a 59, Martha Redmond sank in a 62, Holly Wilson recorded a 64, and Hannah Dilorenzo picked up a 71.
Auburn ousts Rome Free Academy
In girls lacrosse action, Rome Free Academy fell victim to a 12-6 defeat from Auburn at the Stadium in a makeup game that was rescheduled following Monday’s rainout.
Meghan McCormick fired in three goals for the Romans, while Alexa Sanzone tallied two goals. Holly Hash also knocked in a goal, as Haleigh Cavalier and Kayli Smith each recorded an assist.
Goaltender Rebecca Kieffer made nine saves in net, as Auburn was led by Livi Brooks with two goals and three assists.
Westmoreland drops to West Canada
The Westmoreland girls track and field squad dropped to a 84-57 loss from defending Section III Class C-2 champion West Canada Valley on the road.
The Lady Bulldogs’ Skyler Zawko and Jessica Riesel each recorded three event wins with Riesel winning the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs, and Zawko claiming the 100 dash and the long jump. Riesel also paired with Anne Quirk, Morgan Murling and Emily Gubbins in the 3,200 relay team’s win, and Zawko was also a part of the winning 400 relay group along with Allyson Smith, Kelli Brasie and Jessica Harper.
Emily Gubbins was also victorious in the 800 run, and Kendra McGregor won the discus throw.
