Site manager to talk on contamination clean-up

Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment Griffiss site manager Michael McDermott will be the presenter at the Rome Academy of Sciences meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Rome Historical Society, 200 Church St. McDermott’s lecture titled "Griffiss Business & Technology Park: Cleanup of Contamination to Permit Civilian Reuse" will cover technical aspects of cleaning up contaminates at the former Griffiss air base.

After the Air Force closed the base in 1993, the pollution and hazardous materials left behind "presented a daunting task for someone to clean up," the Academy noted. The Air Force Real Property Agency and the Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment are responsible for remediation and property transfers. The contractor hired to provide help in this is FPM Remediation, which provides environmental services and design-build construction for the Department of Defense.

An informal dinner will be held at 5:30 the night of the lecture at The Savoy Restaurant, 225 E. Dominick St. Anyone interested in having dinner with the guest speaker and Academy trustees, contact one Trustees Nelson Robinson at 336-9088 or Joe Uvanni at 337-3139.

The meeting is open to the public. Donations for the Rome Academy of Sciences Scholarship Fund are always welcome.

The June banquet for the Rome Science Hall of Fame will be held on Thursday June 7 at the Delta Lake Inn. Tickets are $25, and will be available soon.
