Lady Rebels shine in Albany

ALBANY — The Rome Lady Rebels 11th and ninth grade girls AAU basketball teams competed at the Queen of the Mountain Tournament at SUNY Albany over the weekend, with the 11th graders taking second place and the 9th graders winning two games.

The 11th grade Lady Rebels squad finished with a 3-1 record and suffered their lone loss in the championship game against the Amsterdam Xplosion, 33-32. The Rebels previously beat the Adirondack Panthers 51-24; the Cardinals, 46-31, and the US Lady Hoopsters, 45-17. Kayli Smith led the offense with 32 points, Jordan General had 31 points, and Ashley D’Amore scored 30 points.

The ninth grade Rome squad went 2-2, with its losses coming against the Albany Capitals, 43-32, and the Albany Jr. Falcons, 44-20, on Saturday before coming back to beat the Amsterdam Xplosion, 30-16, and the Kinderhawk Lady Knights, 39-23, on Sunday.

Teresa Anken scored 26 points and made 16 assists, as Kati Gotch added 25 points and 21 rebounds, and Montana Sochia recorded 19 steals.

Rome squad wins women’s bocce tourney

The Rome team of J&E was victorious in the annual Women’s Doubles Bocce Tournament at the Toccolana Club on Saturday.

The winning squad of Joyce Lyman and Ethel Remick defeated the mother and daughter tandem of Gloria and Phyllis Pacella of the Albany-based team, G&P. N&J, consisting of Nancy George and Janet Cianfracco of Rome, placed third.
