War of 1812 program April 25

HERKIMER — The Herkimer County Historical Society opens a series with the "War of 1812: New York’s War" by Robert Arnold, a public historian and historical consultant from Albany.

This free, public program will be held on Wednesday, April 25, at 7 p.m. in the Herkimer County Community College amphitheater (room CC288) in the Robert McLaughlin Campus Center on Reservoir Road.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. In this war, New York State found itself on the front lines facing British Canada. Militia men from Herkimer County, stationed at Sackett’s Harbor on Lake Ontario, protected military and naval stores along the Canadian border. The program includes information on "this often overlooked conflict and its impact on New York State and our local community, organizers said.

The program is being co-sponsored by the H.C.C.C. History Club and is made possible through the support of the New York Council for the Humanities.
