Betty I. Croad
Betty I. Croad, 6889 Green Rd. Durhamville, NY died on Saturday April 14th, 2012 at home with her family by her side.
Born on June 24, 1917 in Ilion, NY she was the daughter of Earl and Ruth Howard. She graduated from a business school in Buffalo, NY and was married to Frederick Croad of Buffalo, NY. They were blessed with three children, a daughter Sandra Joan, and two sons Phillip Earl and Gary Lee. Her husband was killed at Normandy during WWII and she raised her children, never remarrying. She was employed by Curtis Wright Aircraft Factory as "Rosie the Riveter" helping to build P40 Warhawks, and was later employed at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY for thirty years.
She is predeceased by her daughter Sandra Croad-Dodd, and is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Phillip E. and Mary Lou Croad, and son Gary L. and his fiance Darlene Beadnell; 7 grandchildren, Vickie Croad of Metuchin, NJ, Christopher Croad of Durhamville, NY, Frederick Croad of Syracuse, NY, Patrick Croad of Taberg, NY, Jennifer Loveless of Blossvale, NY, Kimberly Dodd Tiger of Newark, DE, and Russell Dodd of Newark, DE. They adored their grandmother who they called Gay Gay. The name stuck and many others referred to her by that name. She also has 19 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren, multiple nieces and nephews, and will be greatly missed by all.
She loved eating out and her favorite saying was HAVE WHAT YOU WANT, I’M BUYING.
Betty was an avid scrabble player well into her 90’s. Her favorite hobbies were going to garage sales; taking day trips in her car, often with grandchildren; cooking; and was an avid reader.
Services will be held at Strong and Burns Funeral Home at 401-403 N. George Street, Rome, NY, 13440.
Calling hours will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18th, with service at 7:00.
