Mohawk Valley Red Cross seeks nominations for ‘Real Heroes’

Mohawk Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross has opened nominations for its 2012 "Real Heroes" awards, to be celebrated at the Deputy Kurt B. Wyman Real Heroes Breakfast.

The program, now in its sixth year, honors community heroes and individuals or organizations that go beyond the call of duty. The public, as well as community agencies, are invited to submit a nomination.

Nomination forms can be obtained by calling the Mohawk Valley’s Rome office at 336-0030, the chapter’s website, or by e-mailing The deadline for nominations is April 27.

The winning nominees will be honored at the Kurt B. Wyman "Real Heroes" Breakfast that will held on June 8 at The Beeches on Turin Road.

The Mohawk Valley Red Cross Board of Directors voted to honor fallen Deputy Wyman with the Community Award, the program’s top honor, in this year’s "Real Heroes" Awards program. Last year the former Rome Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, which is now part of the Mohawk Valley Chapter, voted to permanently name the awards breakfast in Wyman’s memory.

Previous Community Award winners were Raymond A. Meier in 2007; Rome Common Council President John Mazzaferro in 2008; retired Fire Chief Roger Sabia in 2009; Christopher Destito (posthumously) in 2010; and former Assemblywoman RoAnn M. Destito in 2011.

Victor Fariello Jr., community chapter executive, said the organization is looking to hear stories about acts of courage, quick thinking in an emergency or just every-day heroes that make the community a better place to live.

Past recipients have received awards for Blood Services, Military, Emergency Response, Community Service, Youth Leadership and the Clara Barton Award.

Tickets for the Kurt B. Wyman "Real Heroes" Breakfast are $30 per person. To obtain tickets or for further information, e-mail Fariello at or call 733-4666, ext. 222.
