for boater safety course

A free boater safety course will be offered this month for anyone looking to ride motorboats and personal watercrafts this summer. Three Saturday course dates so far are: April 14, 21 and 28. The eight-hour class is hosted by the Sheriff’s Marine Patrol, and will be held at the County Stop DWI Office at 200 Base Road in Whitestown, at the old county airport complex. Classes will start at 8:30 a.m.

You need a boater safety certificate you are 14-years or older and want to ride a personal watercraft or anyone between 10 and 18-years-old who wants to operate a motorboat.

Anyone may ride a personal watercraft if someone who is at least 18-years-old is also riding and has their own safety certificate. Children less than 10-years-old may operate a motor boat if someone with a safety certificate is already on board, or if there is someone older than 18.

To sign up for a course, call Sue Goding at the Sheriff’s Office at 765-2222. The classes will be limited to the first 30 people who sign up. Bring a lunch.

Check the website of the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation at for other courses or call the Coast Guard Auxiliary at 1-800-336-2628.
