FLOYD — Paul Ulmer, 86, of Floyd, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2012 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, surrounded by the love of his family.

He was born April 11, 1925, in Reading, PA, a son of Robert and Anna Grau Ulmer. Paul and four of his brothers proudly served in the US Navy during World War II. His brother William was killed in action. Paul lived in Lancaster, PA for many years prior to relocating to Rome, NY. While in Lancaster, he and his father, Robert, were long time employees of Oblender’s Furniture Store in Downtown Lancaster. On December 31, 1974, in Floyd, he married Mildred J. Smith Thayer. Paul worked at UAP Engine Rebuilders in Utica, retiring in 2000, after 40 years of dedicated service. Following his retirement, he worked for several years for HMS Host Restaurants at the Oneida Service Area on the NYS Thruway. He was a member of the Floyd United Methodist Church; a member of the Floyd Fire Department, where he served as President for 17 years; and the American Legion Leon Roberts Post #161 in Holland Patent.

Paul deeply missed his son, Paulie, who died at the age of 5 after suffering with Leukemia. Paul was a faithful supporter of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Paulie’s name. Paul was a wonderful family man and provider. He loved his family, especially time spent with his grandchildren. He enjoyed singing and dancing, and eating... especially cookies and ice cream. He referred to Floyd, NY as "God’s country."

He is survived by his wife Mildred, of Floyd; his children, Dennis A. Ulmer, FL, Linda S. Ulmer, PA, Denise (Ulmer) Wade, FL, Barbara and William Brewer, Mohawk, Susan Elia, FL, Thomas and Carol Thayer, TX, William and Mary Thayer, Oriskany, Edward and LouAnn Thayer, Oriskany, Brenda and Mark Bigelow, Wampsville, and Ronald and Melissa Thayer, Holland Patent; 21 grandchildren; and several great and great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, June (Ulmer) Gentile, Utica, and Caroline (Ulmer) Koring, Rome; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Paulie, who died in 1975; sisters, Anna Marie (Ulmer) Stoe, Elizabeth Ulmer, and Dorothy (Ulmer) Ayzian; and brothers, Robert Ulmer, Jr., Wesley Ulmer, Eugene Ulmer, William Ulmer, and Jackson (Jack) Ulmer.

The family wishes to sincerely thank the St Elizabeth’s Medical Center ICU Unit and the Pines of Utica for the wonderful care that Mr. Ulmer received during his illness.

Funeral services will be Friday, 11:00 a.m. at Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, Forty Main Street, Whitesboro, with Rev. Laurie Pauley officiating. American Legion Post 161 will offer military honors during the funeral. Interment in Oriskany Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family. Calling hours are Thursday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Floyd Fire Department will conduct services at 6:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and Floyd Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
