Proctor student surrenders in beating of teammate

A 17-year-old Proctor High School student has been charged with assault in connection with a fight Tuesday in the school cafeteria that put another teen in a coma.

Police said Hassan Lacy, of Mathews Avenue, surrendered to authorities Thursday and was charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, and disorderly conduct. Police said Lacy attacked a fellow student, also 17, in the cafeteria at about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday. Police said both Lacy and the victim were members of the school track team, and were at a team meeting.

Police said the two had been involved in a previous fight and had exchanged heated words.

The victim was walking away from Lacy in the cafeteria when police said Lacy punched him and knocked him to the floor. Authorities said Lacy then continued to strike the victim, even as the other teen fell into unconsciousness. Lacy was pulled off the victim by his teammates.

Police said the victim, whose identity was not released, suffered several fractures to his face and bleeding in his brain. He remains hospitalized.

Lacy turned himself in to police Thursday evening. He is scheduled to appear in City Court.
