Healthy turnout for CPR training classes

TOWN OF LEE — Town fire commissioners are already thinking about offering another free CPR training class for the community for a fourth straight year in 2013, after being pleased by the turnout at a session last month.

Commissioners on Monday night reviewed the CPR class results, and discussed seeking grants to help pay for an estimated $10,000 fire extinguisher equipment and training package.

¿ About 40 people participated in CPR training at a March 24 class at the Lee Center Volunteer Fire Department Bingo Hall. It was a "pretty good response," said Board of Fire Commissioners Chairman Brian Mandryck.

Mandryck noted "tentative plans" to hold the class again sometime next winter, adding "we’ll keep doing it" as long as the public continues to respond. The turnout brought a wide range of ages, including several Boy Scouts as well as some senior citizens, said Mandryck, adding that some participants took the class as a refresher after going to the initial one. Previous attendance included 50 at the 2010 session, and 33 in 2011.

The town fire district has offered the class in partnership with AmCare, Midstate EMS, plus the Lee Center, Lake Delta and Western volunteer fire departments.

¿ Mandryck said commissioners are compiling more information on potential government grants that could pay for at least part of the proposed fire extinguisher package, which was requested by the Lee Center fire department. The department or the fire district may file documents seeking a grant, depending on the type of program, Mandryck remarked.

Commissioners oversee the Lee Center department, and manage fire protection in the taxpayer-funded Lee fire district.
