‘Music for the Morning’ sunrise service theme
An ecumenical Easter Sunrise Service will be held Easter Sunday at 8 a.m., April 8, at the Erie Canal Village, 5789 Rome-New London Road (Routes 46, 49).
"Come join us for a time of worship and reflection on the Resurrection of Christ," said the Rev. Inell Claypool of the sponsoring Rome Clergy Association.
The service will be led by various members of the association. The theme is "Music for the Morning.
The Rev. Sam Pendergast, First Presbyterian Church; Pastor Ronald Colangelo, Light and Life Community Church and Carolyn Nelson, Bartlett Baptist Church will provide the music.
The service is generally held in the Rev. Dr. Charles Sykes memorial pavilion on the end of the Packet Boat Cafe adjacent to the parking lot. Sykes pastored Zion Episcopal Church (1954-1972) but also was on the Hospital Board (1959-69) and Board of Education (1971-77) and had served as police chaplain. He received the City of Rome Good Citizenship Award in 1972, along with many other awards. At Stonehedge Nursing Home he served as both a spiritual counselor and social director. The clergy association named its Christian Service Awards given to teen-agers at the annual Thanksgiving service for him.
Whether held in the Sykes pavilion or in the cafe, participants are advised to dress warmly as Saturday’s overnight low is predicted to be in the mid 30s.
