Son charged in assault

A registered Level 2 sex offender and former Utica restaurant-owner was charged Wednesday with repeatedly slamming his mother’s head against the floor.

Authorities said Matthew Cuda then drove his mother to a hospital in Otsego County and lied about her injuries.

Police said Cuda, 51, of Devereux Street, attacked his mother on Tuesday by pushing her to the ground and then repeatedly slamming her head against the floor, causing several facial injuries. Police said Cuda then drove his mother to the Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, where he told the staff that she had fallen off the couch. The staff wasn’t buying Cuda’s story, authorities said.

Village police were notified, and they in turn called the Utica police to begin an investigation. Cuda was returned to Utica on Wednesday on a charge of second-degree assault, a class D felony, police said.

Cuda once owned Grimaldi’s Restaurant on Bleecker Street in Utica.

Cuda is a Level 2 sex offender after he was convicted of sodomy in May 1998 for having sex with a 13-year-old boy, according to state records. He served two years in

state prison.
